Nepal Festival 2018
The Nepal Festival 2018 was held on Saturday 17th November 2018 at Aotea Square, Auckland. The program was an upgraded version of the usual Nepal Day program as it was held at a popular central Auckland location with a much bigger scope than the usual Nepal Day programs. The event was organised by the New Zealand Nepal Society (NZNS) with heavy support from several other Nepalese community organisations from all over New Zealand, various government and funding agencies, corporates and most importantly Auckland Council.
The aim of the program was to showcase Nepalese culture, showcase Nepalese heritage, promote Nepal and promote Nepalese businesses in New Zealand. This was achieved by showcasing Nepalese cultural dances, live music, food and art. The main attraction of the event was the Nepal house where various traditional artefacts were displayed. Different exciting varieties of Nepalese food were also served by many food stall holders. It was indeed a great display of the colourful diversity of Nepalese culture.
The program was attended by many dignitaries. The festival was inaugurated jointly by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff and the Nepalese ambassador to New Zealand Ms Lucky Sherpa. Other dignitaries present were Lady June Hillary (Patron, NZNS), Justice Minister Mr Andrew Little, Member of Parliament Mr Michael Wood, Ms Melissa Lee, Ms Priyanca Radhakrishnan, Mr Simon Bridges (Leader of the opposition) and Mr Kawaljeet Singh Bakshi among others.
The final act by one of the first world famous Nepalese instrumental bands - Kutumba made the festival memorable. Their folk tunes made everyone dance together. They were supported by many other talented local Nepalese and New Zealand bands/artists. The energetic dancing performance by the Maori comedy music group JGeeks was another major highlight of the event.
The event was one of the successful and ambitious initiatives undertaken by NZNS under the leadership of President Mr Dinesh Khadka and the executive committee led by him. This would not have been possible without the support from dedicated members of the organisation and several volunteers who worked dedicatedly to put on this event. The success of the program was evident by the number of attendees - a huge turnout of 9,000 plus people according to Auckland Live who was the venue partner. The program was widely covered by local and Nepalese media.
